Captain Nelson has been with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department since May 2000. His career started at the old Adult Detention Center as a Corrections Deputy. Captain Nelson was transferred to the Patrol Division in April 2003 and graduated from the Mississippi Law Enforcement Training Academy in November 2003. He came back to the Adult Detention Center in May 2005 and was present at the jail during Hurricane Katrina ensuring the needs of the inmates were still being met after the storm. He transferred back to Patrol in October 2006 and remained there until 2008. In January of 2009 he was transferred to Criminal investigations and in December of the same year he was promoted to Sergeant and transferred to the Adult Detention Center as a shift supervisor. In January of 2011 he was transferred back to Criminal Investigations until May of 2012. In May of 2012 he was transferred back to the Adult Detention Center as a shift supervisor until September of 2013. He was transferred to the Adult Detention Center’s Criminal Investigator position in September of 2013. He was promoted to Lieutenant in October of 2013 and in January of 2014 he was reassigned as the Assistant Director of the ADC. He was promoted to Captain in March of 2017 and was the Administrative Captain over Professional Standards and Training, Special Operations and,  Fleet Manager until June 2019. He is now the Director of Corrections at the New Jackson County Adult Detention Center. Captain Nelson served in the United States Navy and is originally from Boston, Massachusetts. He is a graduate of the Mississippi Law Enforcement Command College in August 2014.
