Mitchell Roy Herrington - Found Guilty of Aggravated Assault

District Attorney Press Release

On May 19, 2022, after a three-day trial, a Jackson County jury found Mitchell Roy Herrington, 57, guilty of Aggravated Assault.

On May 19, 2022, after a three-day trial, a Jackson County jury found Mitchell Roy Herrington, 57, guilty of Aggravated Assault. During the trial, the State presented evidence that Herrington savagely attacked his ex-girlfriend, on May 30, 2018, with a machete causing life-threatening injuries. The assault occurred at the victim’s apartment after she told Herrington to leave. After attacking the victim with the machete, Herrington provided no aid to her.   Instead, he left her bleeding on her couch and went to a liquor store. Eventually, first responders were notified and rendered aid to the victim and transported her to Ocean Springs Hospital.  The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case.

Judge Dale Harkey sentenced Herrington to twenty (20) years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections without the possibility of parole.

District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath stated, “The jury heard the victim’s voice today and in so doing, gave her justice by holding the Defendant accountable for this intentional and vicious attack.”

Assistant District Attorney Carolyn Lewis stated, “The victim in this case suffered a brutal and disfiguring machete attack by her ex-boyfriend.  It is a miracle that she survived.  We are grateful to the first responders and medical professionals who saved the victim’s life.”

Assistant District Attorney Bill Barrett stated, “The Defendant claimed he was sleepwalking at the time of the crime, but the truth was revealed at trial and the jury rejected his false claims and excuses.”

This case was prosecuted by Bill Barrett and Carolyn Lewis.
